Claye was a two-time Arizona state champion in the triple jump. He was named to the 2008 USA Today All-USA Track & Field Team in both the long and triple jump and posted the nation's best jump, 52-4.25, in 2008 high school triple jump action. He was a two-time U.S. Junior Olympic triple jump champion and finished first in the triple jump as a member of Team USA at the 2008 Bank of Scotland Cup with a jump of 50-6.75 (15.41).
